Brookshire Brothers announced on Monday that Jerry Johnson will step down as President and CEO at the end of April 2017. He will continue as a member of the Lufkin-based grocer’s Board of Directors.

Brookshire Brothers opened a new store Wednesday with a holiday twist.  Wells Elementary School’s choir sang Christmas favorites as shoppers arrived for the ribbon cutting that also featured student leaders, cheerleaders, and athletes.  Customers flocked to the event to spin the prize wheel, sign up for giveaways and check out the produce, fresh meats, and full service deli in the store that sits on the Cherokee and Angelina County line.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, it seems like our December calendar is filling up quickly! I love Thanksgiving. It’s truly a holiday focused on love of family, friends, and country. I’ve recently been reading about the hardships the original Pilgrims faced, of which they certainly had their fair share. Yet, they were also exceedingly thankful for the simplest things like health, shelter, vitality, and good food.

This year, more than ever, there seems to be a rush to skip over November and Thanksgiving and get right to the Christmas season. I am, however, clinging to my pumpkins, waiting for the leaves to fall and working on being thankful daily for this season. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, so I'm looking forward to spending time with my friends and family. I hope you take time, as you make your Thanksgiving plans, to gather around a table with your loved ones, share why you are thankful this year and enjoy this quick and easy recipe. Every year, we welcome "Fall Back" when Daylight Savings Time ends. However, there are some of us who might appreciate the extra hour of sleep, but aren't welcoming the daylight we're giving up. How, when our lives seem to go from 1-100 as soon as November hits, do we find the time to accomplish our to-do list?
